Types Of Photography Lighting

Whether capturing photos of products or shooting portraits or other images. Achieving great photos of publishable quality, does require some photographic ability whether natural or learned. Photographers often utilize photography equipment such as muslin backdrops and photo lighting kits or lighting stands to highlight the subject. Often times a back light or fill light will be employed as well to eliminate any shadowing affects in the background of the images.

Pro photographers will often choose flash studio lighting for there photo production, particularly when shooting portraiture or modeling shots. The use of flash or strobe lighting requires the synchronized timing of the camera’s shutter to work in unison with the flash to be able to capture high quality photo’s at the perfect time.

Though for some photography enthusiasts, they can also choose to utilize a different type of photo lighting equipment such as continuous lighting. This type of lighting can be found in either Halogen or Fluorescent photo lighting equipment. Referred to as "hot lights" they are much easier to use than flash lighting because no synchronization is required. Photographers can move the light stands where they need them and turn on the power and begin shooting immediately.

Halogen lighting actually burns brighter and produces a considerable amount of heat because of that. If you use this type of continuous lighting, the heat in your home or studio will not only rise but your electric bill will rise as well. Fluorescent lighting stands in comparison are cool to the touch and need only a fraction of the electricity to operate. With saying that, these bulbs don't burn as brightly as halogen bulbs do. To counter that, photographers who want to use fluorescent for it’s coolness and energy efficiency simply choose a higher wattage lighting kit to overcome any luminosity differences in output.

The various choices for photographers with the availability of modern photography studio lighting equipment have been greatly improved in both quality and options. Digital photo lighting kits in both fluorescent and halogen types for instance are available to keep pace with the growing world of digital photography.

Photography equipment is designed to enable photographers , regardless of whether they are a professional or a beginner to be able to elevate the quality of their photographic images on a consistent basis. Raising both their photos and the very craft of photography to a higher level.

Taking Portraits by Way of Digital Photography

Published by under General

Photography is a skill.  It takes practice, skill, and an eye for the unexpected.  Not all photographers will take the time to observe a scenic, animals, architectual structures, or other subject to find the hidden depth within, but when they do often they will find great meaning in the photo they take.  Photographers spend their lives looking for new and different ways to shoot a subject.  Digital photography is just one new way of taking a picture.  There are many advantages for working with digital photography.

Digital photography can be a great asset the professional digital cameras with the interchanging lenses, manual setting or it can be a simple point and shoot camera.  Whether you are looking for a professional grade picture or something your friends will laugh over digital photography has made taking photos easier.  As I said before we can see the picture before we ever print, and also a lot of digital cameras will allow you to crop and save the photo before printing.

Digital cameras can be all sizes from a key chain camera to the professional.  We have all had a little fun with digital on our phones.  If you are more interested in the professional side of photography the first digital camera you choose should have interchangeable lenses with a high resolution.  It can be automatic if you feel more comfortable with light settings, however most have ISO settings, aperture, and shutter speed choices as well.

Like with older photographer setting up your shot is half the fun.  Determining the settings you need to use for light is the other.  Setting up your shot still requires you to have an eye for the unusual or for making the unusual out of a common scene.  Walk around the subject and look for every possible angle, you may even decide to take several photos to choose the best angle.  Digital photography seems to outweight the film cameras of yesterday.  Once you have looked at all angles and taken photos you get to see if the effect you wanted is there.  It is much quicker to learn the camera settings and other functions on a shot and use lighting because you see the results while you still looking at the scene.

Digital photography may not seem like it would still use all those skills you learned on your old camera, but this is definitely not true.  In other words digital photography helps with your learning while you are still on location.  Instead of many hours in the dark room or waiting in line you can get the picture you want right then.  It certainly gives more towards vacation photos when you can see if your thumb is over the lens or the camera strap was in the way or worse someone just walked in front of you.  Digital portraits has helped us to change our way of viewing photography.

Natural Light Portrait Photography

Published by under Tips and Ideas

Most think you must have a massive investment in lighting to do a good job. Portrait photography is the same as any other area of photography. You must know how to use your equipment and understand light and angles. The light can be man make from strobes or a continous source. It can also be from windows or open doorways. The source of the light does not matter. What counts is how you control or modify the light. I learned light control when doing jewelry photography. I photographed both jewelry , wedding bands and diamond engagement rings. They required total light control or the reflections would ruin your shot.

What you need for portrait photography

  • Stool
  • Colored Matte Boards-Optional
  • Tripod
  • White Sheet - Optional
  • DSLR Camera

One of the first things you need to understand is what good light looks like. Walk outside at 12:00 noon on a bright hot day. Where I live that means clear skies and at least 100 degrees. Try to open your eyes and even the reflection from the sidewalk is blinding. This is not good light. Go back inside the air conditioned house and cool down. Now when the sun moves to the back side of your home go to the opposide side. Open the front door and let the soft even light flow in. Notice how it lights a path about 3 feet into the room. This is what I would call nice soft light. Hold up a black poster board and see how it blocks sections of the light. This can be done to increase slight shadows and add depth to your portrait. You can also increase the light by bouncing off a white poster board. This will fill shadows or add light on one side to produce slight shadows on the opposite side. Watch for reflections from cars, sidewalks and buildings. What you see is what you get so play around with it and watch for changes. Very slight changes in lighting make a major impact on the final portrait.

Next I would get the model into position. I would bring an armless chair or stool to sit on. For most portrait photography you want to hide the problem areas and bring out the eyes. Shooting down at a slight angle will do this most of the time. With the model in the chair place a solid color backing behind her. I prefer brown or other earth tones. Black is OK but a bit harsh and can mix with dark colored hair since we are not using an above the head hair light for seperation. The low position of the model does provide a touch of a natural hair light but not enough to define dark black hair against a dark black background.

Pick one of your better quality, longer lenses for the photo. I like 100-200mm range but from 85mm -300 will give tou a nice look. 24mm and even 50mm can make the subject look wider or a little distorted plus it does not work well with the angel you will be shooting at. Adjust your ISO and shutter speed. I like my portraits taken at around F4.5.-F5 This gives a sharp face with a very slight softness starting at the ears and back. Under this you may have sharp eyes but the nose may look soft which is not good for portraits. If using a lower cost lens you may need to start at F5.6 which will work fine.

White Balance is the key to great color reproduction. This way I get much better skin tones and can go a touch warmer or cooler in post processing while still knowing what my neutral ( balanced ) shot looks like. Most of the time I leave it as shoot. During processing I may give my background a slight burn at low opacity to increase the depth. Same with the hair or clothing. I may also give the face a tiny bit more depth or contrast depending on how close I got my lighting during the shoot. Using this style of shooting you should have a very nice portrait.

You must use a color corrected monitor for portraits. My main screen is corerected and looks 99% the same as my lab prints. My not so costly laptop does not have the adjustments and the photos never look correct. If you are serious about doing portraits invest in a good monitor and color correction softwear.

Lighting for Beginner Photographers

Published by under Learning

Basic lighting for photography really is simple if you break it down. Many new photographers don't take time to learn the basic rules about light. Start with ambient light before moving to strobes.

What you need to start.

  • Soft Doorway Light
  • Manual Setting on Camera
  • Silver Reflector

I would suggest trying to learn how to see light first then worry about what lighting equipment to buy. This will save you a lot of money and confusion when getting started in photography.
This is easy way to get started. Open the front or back door of your house when the sun is on the opposite side of the building. Place a chair about 1 foot inside the doorway and have your model sit down.MAke sure she is not wearing too much bright reflective jewelry. Small earrings are fine. Go outside and take a look at how the light flows in. It will light her evenly and quickly fade off on the floor 2-3 feet behind her. Now you know what soft even light looks like. Add a reflector and see the change. A simple white foam core board will reflect light and a silver color reflector will do the same but look quite a bit different hitting the model. A light gray or off white will still cast some reflection. The gray or off white may also change the color of the light which may not be as easy to see until after you take the photo. Using the white or silver will look like a light was turned on from the reflection. The others will be a lot softer and harder to see but will make a difference. Make a mental note of the look.

Always look for the same soft even light everywhere you go. Find a covered area such as a bridge, doorway or large overhang and look for the same light. It will always be there if you look for it. Notice how the light enters the covered area and provides full even coverage of your model then drops off quickly allowing the background to be darker and less noticeable. Do some shots and start to modify the look. A white sidewalk or building next to you will reflect light different than grass or an open field. Keep using the reflectors to modify the look of the photo. It will become something you don't need to think about. You just see slight changes in light and know what to do without much thought. Like most things it is easy after you learn how to do it. When ready to add flash start the same way. One fill light from the front then move it to the side. It will look better and you will actually see why. Later add a strobe and by the time you get to using reflectors and 3-4 strobes you will understand and see what each one is doing to the image. Start with just the bare minimum and add components only after you can see the changes each one makes. This will not only help you take much better photos it will save you a lot of money. You will know ahead of time what kind of light modifiers you really want to use to control your light before you buy them.

Another very important thing I should mention is you must have control of your camera. Make sure to shoot only in Manual mode. Any auto functions will be making changes and you will not know the difference you see are from camera settings or light control.

Nikon D3x Review – Features and Benefits of Nikon D3x For Your Photoshoot Requirements

Published by under General

For the lensman who wants to have complete control over every nook and cranny in his or her camera, the Nikon D3x is definitely the top choice. A close Nikon D3x review shows better features over previous D3 digital SLR, which received positive feedbacks for its ergonomic design and superior portability.  Bear in mind however that this is no lightweight, the body alone weighing in at 43 ounces (1.2 kg).

The biggest change is noticeable in the sheer number of megapixels, imagine a mind numbing 24.5! Boasting Nikon's new technology, FX-format CMOS sensor, this camera increases the sensing area to 35.9 x 24.0mm. That equates to its full resolution, as commented on by Trey Ratcliff in his Nikon D3x review, in his much visited travel blog, stuckincustoms.com. Although he acknowledges that this feature alone increases the sticker value considerably and may not be generally suited for small photos, this is a must for his requirements, since he wants every shot to be the best. He also comments that the resolution on the Nikon D3x makes it perfect for giant screens, even in very close range.

Another attraction on this model is the ability to shoot up to 5 frames per second at the highest resolution, and up to 7 frames per second in a lower resolution, the DX format in 10.5 megapixels. This aspect makes it perfect for outdoor activities and travel photographers, when recording each moment makes the difference between a magnificent shot and a poor one. Granted, it is not the fastest on the market, but the camera specs offer high ISO, starting at ISO 100 up to ISO 1600. If that is still not sufficient, there are alternatives to adjust the sensitivity range appropriate to your situation. There are a lot more you can do to adjust the settings two stops higher or one stop lower, which further extends the ways shots can be taken, achieving a high of up to ISO 6400 or a low to ISO 50 once more making this an outstanding choice for photographers who like to manipulate and predict exactly the outcome of every shot.

Some other advantages are the two CF cards slots and the ability of the battery to operate up to 4,400 images per charge. The monitor offers crystal clear viewing with a vibrant three inch super density 920,000 LCD screen. Does Nikon D3x camera have any drawbacks? Trey Ratcliff, remarked earlier, complains of the one step at a time programming step progression, whereas he would like to be able to program steps by twos. Notwithstanding, those details aside, he declares that this camera is his favorite and exlusively uses it, because he wants a companion that is extremely reliable, that taking second chances when in remote locations is not possible. Certainly it shows in his pictures the absolute capabilities of this camera.

The only other drawback for some may be the price. With price starting from roughly 8 thousand dollars, not including any accessories or zooms, the reviewed Nikon D3x camera is definitely for professionals or those who only want the best. And at most times, the best is the only choice for those at the top.
